If there’s one thing I’m seeing a lot of in conversations and in social media it’s the misunderstanding or misinterpretation that comes from the ignorance of not being exposed to more than one truth. To try and remedy that I usually turn to literature, to teach me and show me worlds different than my own.
In light of what is happening in the world right now, I’ve compiled this list of diverse books that mostly cover the racial issue in America (and a few from the UK). Some of the books I’ve read and loved, some I’ve put on my TBR list.
If you are wondering why it’s important to read diverse books then look up Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s TED talk on the danger of the single story. Where she talks about how stories only told from one viewpoint creates stereotypes and a worldview that is incomplete. Remember that there’s more ways to see the world than just with your own eyes; literature let’s us see the world through someone else’s eyes.
