Poem – Table for four

At a table for four
I am guest number five
With nowhere to sit
They tell me:
You should consider yourself
lucky we would even invite
Someone like you
And I always assumed
They were superior too

At a table for four
I am guest number five
With nothing to eat
They tell me:
You should consider yourself
Lucky we will share
What is leftover
And I always assumed
That warranted gratitude

At a table for four
I am guest number five
And with nothing to drink
They tell me:
You should consider yourself
Lucky we lift our glass
Toasting for you
And I always assumed
That satiated me too

At a table four
I am guest number five
And with nothing to say
They tell me:
You should consider yourself
Lucky after all we know
Better than you
And I always assumed
That statement was true

If the tables are full
And the seats are filled
Find a vacant place
And build
So you can sit at the table
Eat a meal
And toast
And share
With the ones who will sit
Together with you there
