Some days are made for just lounging around and getting lost between pages. Tropical nights by the lake, snowed in winter nights by the fire or rainy days under blankets. “Candy books” are books that can be read in a day and perfect for those days you want to read but not commit to a longer read.
Here’s are a few of my favorite candy books…

 

Turtles All The Way Down by John Green

A germophobic teenager and her best friend looks for a boy’s missing father for a big reward.

Now that I think about it, all John Green books can be devoured in a day, if you have the right enthusiasm. Also you can never go wrong with Green’s books. Always full of heart, curiosities and flawed and charming characters you’ll never forget.

 

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson

Something strange is going on between John’s friend Dr.Jekyll and the mysterious Mr.Hyde and John is intent to find out what.

This is actually one of my favorite books in the whole world. The duality of our personalities, the contradictions that we are, I believe, anyone can relate to. You probably know the story already, and if you don’t, well hop to it! It’s only around 50 or so pages depending on the version.

 

We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

A sweet little and yet important TED talk in book form about the pitfalls of calling yourself a feminist. (Feminism: it’s not what you think! We wear deodorant!) And she’s right all the way through, we should all be feminists. If you’re not convinced, read the book and get back to me!

 

 

Levels of life by  Julian Barnes

This ones a little trickier. It lies in the title there, it’s about levels of life. About life and loss. About love and hate. And it’s about hot airballons. I’ll leave it at that.

It’s short, but you might need time to digest this one, it’s quite heavy. But beautiful, oh so beautiful. I couldn’t stop my tears. (And I was on public transport at the time!) Read it on a warm summers day in field looking up at the sky! (you’ll thank me later!)

 

It ends with us by Coleen Hoover

Romance! I have romance on my list! Lily (the florist! What a coincidence!) meets the love of her life and all is bliss until the love of her life starts showing some troubling behaviour.

I hardly ever have romance on my list because I never read it! But I read this, and it was easy candy reading. I hear Coleen Hoover specializes in books of this sort, so I’m guessing any of her books would do the trick if you’re looking for a romantic evening between pages.

 

Animal farm by George Orwell

It’s political. A satirical book dumping on Stalin. It’s clever, and one of those books you need to read in your lifetime. I’m pretty sure it’s on all those lists. If you haven’t read it, and you’re done with school, then how did you get through school without reading this one? Read it now!

 

 

 

Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

Two very different drifters with the same dream trying their luck as farm hands and ending up with some broken hope.

One of my favorite mandatory school books. I actually enjoyed this one in middle school! It’s touching and it’s a little depressing and it’s set in the depression. An easy 100 plus pages. I haven’t read everything by Steinbeck, but until I do, I’m claiming this one as my favorite Steinbeck!

 

The stranger By Albert Camus

And one of my favorite books of all time!

It’s about society, about not fitting in, about knowing who you are and still doubting everything. Most possibly the most beautiful, brilliant and exciting page and end sentence I have ever read! It’s an easy read with a hard message! I cannot recommend this book enough!
