What did I just read? This book goes full circle and yet nothing seems to happen. It’s full of people that tell you all or nothing about the protagonist. And for the first time I felt what it was like to be a fly on the wall – and it’s BORING! On the other hand I found myself folding corners on pages more than I’d like to admit because I thought there were some really profound life insights there.
The book in it’s entirety is 10 chapters – ten conversations the protagonist – a writing teacher in Athens – have with different people. None whom she seems particularly close to.
I don’t think I’ve ever had a greater love/hate relationship with a book before, and while I struggled, I also found it easy and finished it in a breeze. It feels like one of the longest books and still it’s only 250ish pages with a large font! I don’t know what to make of it. I can’t recommend it. I can’t not recommend it. I’ve never had an experience quite like this before.
And yet, there is something that had me reaching for the next book the second I finished. This is the first of a trilogy, but I believe you could only read this one and be good. I don’t know yet though, I’ll find out and keep you posted! Meanwhile – if you want to try this one, consider yourself warned. It’s going to test your patience. Make sure you have some extra stored up.
